The following is a list of requirements for your race vehicle. Vehicles not conforming to these requirements will not be eligible to race.

Power Source: Must be solely gravity-powered. No pushing off or powered/assist devices allowed.

Construction: This is a DIY race. Your cart needs to be homemade but can be made using a car kit.

Rider Limit: Only one rider per vehicle.

Brakes:

  • Must have brakes capable of stopping the vehicle in a short stretch of road after the finish line.
  • Brakes must be easily operated while steering, with drag-type brakes faced with rubber (e.g., old tire tread).
  • The braking mechanism must be repeatable by the driver; no weight-based or single-use brakes. Turning: Must be able to turn easily at high speeds.

Wheels: Must have at least three load-bearing wheels (no one- or two-wheel vehicles). The wheel base should be a maximum of: 4 feet in legnth center to center and 31 inches wide from the outside of the tires.

Floor: Vehicles must have a solid floor that contains the driver’s feet and knees (no foot pegs).

Dimensions:

  • Must be no larger than 6 feet long and 4 feet wide. Car will be measured from nose of the car to the back wheel ground contact point.
  • Optimal size is 6 feet long and 3 feet wide to fit in a standard pickup truck.
  • No height restriction.

Towing Hook: Must have a strong open hook or cleat on both the front and back for towing. Vehicles will be part of a chain of carts towed up a hill, and the frame must withstand being towed up a steep incline.

Weight Limits:

  • Kid Division: Vehicle and driver combined cannot exceed 250 pounds.
  • Teen Division: Vehicle and driver combined cannot exceed 350 pounds.
  • Adult Division: Vehicle and driver combined cannot exceed 450 pounds.

Race Number Space: Racing numbers should not be put onto the car but will rather be assigned at check in.

Sharp Edges: Vehicles must not have any sharp edges, inside or outside, that could harm passersby or the racer in case of a crash.

Vehicle Sharing: Carts may be shared with another driver, but not within the same age division unless riders take turns during the two heats. This rule exists to minimize race delays. In this case, each driver must pay the registration fee.

Cart Design:

  • Visuals must be non-offensive with no nudity or profanity.
  • No political or candidate advertising is allowed, but merchant advertising is encouraged.
  • Added Weight: Added weight to the vehicle is strictly prohibited. All components of the race vehicle must contribute to the frame, function, or safety features of the car. Superfluous or decorative elements will be allowed at the discretion of race officials. Any components of the race vehicle deemed as "added weight" by race officials must be removed for the vehicle to pass inspection.

Vehicle Recommendations

  • Sound: Vehicles may make noise or sounds while in motion — this is encouraged for fun!
  • Materials: Vehicles may be made from wood, metal, stone, plastic, string, tape, fiberglass, fabric, or any combination of materials, as long as they are safe and weigh less than the combined racer class weight limit.

Dress Code

Safety gear is a must, this includes a helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, leather gloves and close toed sneakers/shoes. NO Crocs or flipflops. (Enclosed car cockpit drivers do not need knee pads).

Pro Tips:

  • Thin wheels and well-oiled bearings are recommended.
  • Avoid hard plastic wheels as they do not grip the road as well as rubber and tend to slide on curves.
