Cullman Derby Day
The Cullman Derby Race is one of the featured events in the Cullman Summer Series, which promotes free, hands-on learning experiences for all ages. Organized by the Cullman Child Development Center and a community of dedicated volunteers, our center offers a unique, cognitively oriented, developmentally appropriate, and success-based curriculum that prepares children for life.
All proceeds from the Summer Series are reinvested into future events, ensuring we can continue offering these valuable community programs year after year.
About the Derby Race Project
Building a derby race vehicle is an exciting STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) project that combines creativity with practical skills to produce a gravity-powered car. This collaborative activity is perfect for kids, adults, families, friends, and even local businesses looking to get involved and promote their brands.
We encourage the vehicle-building process to be a joint effort between children and adults. However, inherited or legacy cars from previous races, including Soap Box Derbies, are welcome as long as they meet the current requirements.
Get Creative!
We've seen everything from trash cans, wheelchairs, and duct tape to wheelbarrows, milk crates, and more transformed into innovative, uniquely designed race vehicles.
Whether your vehicle is built from scratch or comes from a kit, the top priority is safety. We want as many youth participants as possible, and we aim to keep costs low to ensure accessibility for all interested families.
